Quarry Fight History

 

June, 2007       Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff director for land reclamation recommended approval of a 100-year permit for Magruder Limestone to operate a quarry on Woodriver Road.  An asphalt plant will opened also.

 

July                  Woodriver neighbors petitioned DNR for a hearing to challenge the permit on the issues of health, safety and livelihood.

 

September        Land Reclamation Commission (LRC) granted a formal hearing.

 

October           Hired attorney Brian McGovern, who has experience in a previous hearing.

 

November        Pre-hearing conference.  Presentation to Osage school board.

 

Feb., 2008       Depositions of Woodriver petitioners.  Received the support of our area representatives and the Director of Tourism.

 

March 6           Public meeting at Central Bank to inform concerned citizens of quarry fight..

March              Presentations to the Board of Realtors, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lake Ozark Chamber of Commerce and Miller County Commission.

 

March 24         First session of formal hearing; held in Osage Beach. 

 

April                 Depositions of DNR staff and Magruder personnel.

 

April 23            Presentations and display at Waste Watchers Earth Day celebration. 

 

April 28-30      Second session of formal hearing; held in Jefferson City.  There was testimony from Woodriver residents, DNR staff, Magruder personnel and sewer plant staff.

 

May                 Depositions of expert witnesses.

 

May 2              The Tri-County Lodging Association lobbyist arranged a meeting with DNR Director Doyle Childers, at his office in Jeff City.  Members of the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Lake Chamber of Commerce also attended.

 

May 6              Met with Reps. Rodney Schad, Wayne Cooper, and Tom Self, Sen. Chuck Purgason and Acting Dir. of Tourism Bob Smith.  All have or will contact LRC.

 

May 23-Jun 6               Third session of formal hearing for expert testimony and members of the Sunrise Beach Quarry Accountability Committee. 

 

June                 Hearing officer will send his report and recommendation to LRC.

 

July 24             Next regular LRC meeting
